Visualizer Photo FX - People will notice when you FX it!

Working with text using Visualizer Photo FX.

Adding text to an image can be great for many purposes. Examples of this could be when you want to add a little watermark or when you want to add a title to an image. Visualizer Photo FX will not only let you embed a single line text into your images, it will also let you embed multi line text. In this tutorial we will be learning how to add a text, change the font and font size, and how to change the font color. We will also be looking at how to add effects to a text.

Embedding a text into an image.

Text is a lot of fun, as it allow us to personalize our images in many different ways. There are standard ways to go about this and there are also the more creative ways. Before we start working with our text, I suggest we start a new document that will give us a neautral background to work with. Click on the foreground color and select the white color from the monochrome palette (RGB: 255,255,255). Then click on the double arrow icon connecting the foreground color and the background color, to switch between the two. Click on the foreground color again and select the black color from the monochrome palette (RGB: 0,0,0).

Click on the foreground color.
Click on the foreground
color and select a color.
Switch between the foreground and background color.
Click on the arrow icon
to switch between colors.
Select the colors from the Color Picker.
Select the monochrome palette and select a monochrome color by clicking on the right side palette.

Now that we have selected the colors we are going to use, we are ready to start a new document. Click on the Document button in the upper menu as illustrated below. Then select New document from the menu.

Start a new document from the menu.

Visualizer Photo FX has got some standard image dimensions it will let us choose from, which will help us create a new document fast and easy, using the most common image dimensions found on the Internet. We can also enter our own width and height values if we prefer to use a custom size layout. From the Canvas color we can select the color we want to use for our new document. As you can see the first option is already set to the option we are going to use, which is our foreground color. I know we could have chosen the standard black and white color from the Canvas color menu, however, I wanted you to get familiar with how to select a color from the Color Picker.

Enter a file name for your new document as highlighted in the image below. We are going to use the default features which is the foreground color and the standard 640x480 dimensions. Click on the OK button when you are done.

Enter a file name and click the OK button.

You should now have a completely black canvas, measuring 640 pixels in width and 480 pixels in height. We now have our neutral background which we will use to learn about how to work with text. In the image below I have highlighted some of the important features when working with the text tool. Once you click on the Text button you will notice that the upper area will change into the font names you have installed on your system along with the font size. These options will remain visible until you turn off the text tool (click the Text button again).

In order to get the text tool to work, you will have to make a selection. Drag from left to right and from top to bottom to make your text selection. Now you can enter any text you want, and change the font and font size as seen on the image below.

Working with the text tool.

You can move your text around on the image, which is quite handy as in most cases the text needs to placed in an exact position within the image. To drag the text around, hold down your left mouse button on one of the edges, then start dragging it and try and place it in the center of your image. Once you have placed it where you want it, release the mouse button. To embed the text into our image, all we have to do is click outside the text selection (within the image boundaries).

Turn off the text tool and let's switch to the selection tool. As you can see in the image below I have clicked on the Selection button and made a selection around my text. We are going to use the same technique as we did when made our text selection. Drag from left to right and from top to bottom to make your selection. After you have made a selection you can easily drag it around by holding down your left mouse button inside your selection and drag the selection around. Release your mouse button once you have placed it where you want your selection.

Make a selection around your text.

The next step is to apply a Photo Mask within our selection. We will use the Clouds Black & White from the Default Photo Masks. If you need further information about working with the Photo Masks I highly recommend reading the Working with a selection using Visualizer Photo FX tutorial.

Apply a photo mask to your text

You can instantly see the effect of the Photo Mask once you click the OK button. Your text will become more "dirty" looking using the Clouds Black & White. If we had used a different Photo Mask or applied one more Photo Mask to the Photo Mask we already added, the text will have a different look. This is where I will let you be as creative as you want to be.

Add a filter to your text.

We can continue to add filters to our selected area which can help us highlight our text even more. If you right click inside your selection you will notice there are additional filters which are not located on the left side tool panel. We can add artistic filters to our text and as I have illustrated above, we can also change the color of our text. As you can see it is all about letting yourself be creative after you have embedded the text you want play with.

Go ahead and add the filter Warm Colors from the menu. Now right click again within your selection and this time select the Artistic filters, and then click on the Texturize filter. Should the Texturize filter become too dominant for your taste, you can easily fade the filter into your image by using the Fade FX option, which is located in the lower right corner of your Visualizer Photo FX screen. This option can be used with any filter you apply to your images and selected areas.

I faded mine to 50%, and here is the final result from this tutorial.
The final outcome from the tutorial.
