Working with a selection using Visualizer Photo FX.
Working with the selection tool opens up a whole new world of options. You can crop an area, you can apply photos masks and filters to certain regions of an image, and you can embed other images into an area of your choice. In the following tutorial we will be looking at how to work with the selection and how it can completely change the outcome of an image. Feel free to use the goVIG.us desktop wallpaper. Click on the link and right click on the image to save it to your computer.
Working with an area, rather than the whole image.
Sometimes it's good to leave out certian parts of an image, and sometimes it good to apply effects to a certain region of an image. It all depends on the layout of the image. In some cases we can't avoid that we need to apply changes to an area, and this is where the selection tool will always be your trusty companion. Let's first learn how to create a selection. Click on the Selection button in upper menu. Notice that once you have clicked on the Selection button you will see that it stays down, which means that the selection tool is activated.

I have activated the Selection tool and selected an area of the image.
To make a selection you need to hold down your left mouse button and drag from left to right, and top to bottom. Once you are satisfied with the size of your selection you can release the mouse button. If the selection is not at the exact position where you want it, hold down your left mouse button inside your selection and drag the selection around, until you have it placed in the area where you want it, then release the mouse button. If you are not satisfied with the size of your selection, left click outside of your selected area (within the image boundaries) to de-select your selection. You can also hold down the left mouse button outside of your selected area, and make a new selection. Notice when you make a selection, that the pixel dimensions of your selection will change once you start dragging. You can follow the size of your selection in the lower left corner of your Visualizer Photo FX screen.
Now that we have learned how to make a selection, let's start by making a selection around the goVIG.us logo. Make sure the Selection tool is active and then click on the image using your left mouse. Hold down the mouse button and start dragging from left to right and top to bottom. Once you have made your selection, right click inside your selected area to bring up the menu.

Right click inside your selected area to bring up the extended features.
As you can see in the illustration above, I have already decided to open up the Photo Mask effects. Select Artistic filters from the menu, and then click on the Photo Masking option.

The Ray Of Lights will go well with our selected area.
There are many Photo Masks to choose from, but for this tutorial we will be using Ray Of Lights
- Top to bottom. In the first dropdown menu you can select the category where the photo mask is located. We will be using the Light Masks. Once you select a new Photo Mask category you will notice that the second dropdown menu will change. Now we can select the Ray Of Lights
- Top to bottom effect we want to apply to our selected area. Once you have selected it click on the OK button. You will immediately see the difference.

The FX can been seen immediately after it has been applied to the area.
One of the great powers that comes with Visualizer Photo FX is the option to control the dominance of an effect which has been applied to a complete image or a certain area of an image. Once you have applied an effect you can easily determine how dominant the effect should be. To control this we will use the Fade FX option which is located in the lower right area of your Visualizer Photo FX screen.
As you can see I have set the Fade FX to 60%. Once you start dragging the knob, you can see how it changes your effect within your selected area. You can see the outcome of the Fade FX once you have applied the 60% changes.
Change the look of the effect by fading it into your selected area.
You can choose to stop here and click on the Selection button in the upper menu. This will complete your work with the Selection tool, and return you to normal editing and viewing mode. If you want to crop the area (remove the surronding area outside of your selection) you can also click on the Crop tool which I have highlighted in the illustration below.

You will find the Crop button next to the Selection button.
This completes this tutorial on how to work with the selection tool. Now you know how to apply effects to certain areas, and how to crop areas within your images. At the same time you learned how to change the
strength of the effect you added by using the Fade FX option. Just to highlight a couple more features that also works with the selection tool, I can mention the Open image option which is the Open button located on the left side of your Visualizer Photo FX screen. There is also the Paint bucket that allow you to fill a selected area with a color of your choice. The Paint bucket button can be located in the upper menu of your screen. |
