Default Linking Web Albums to web site

Hi guys, I need help. Yes I know that this has been said before about me but this time the help I need is not medical….

Anyway, I am re building my web site that used to be based around building dolls house furniture into a photography first site. I have web building software that I am happy with that has it’s own gallery builder that I am not happy with.

As VIG software has great web gallery (album) creating features built into Photo Studio and even the free Photo Resize package, I want to use it.

The question is, and please accept that I know nothing about web page creation outside of WYSIWYG editors, how do I link the Web Album created using VIG software to my web site?

When I FTP my files to my Host, I have a folder into which all the HTML pages go. My builder software creates two sub folders which contain the image files generated when I ‘publish’ my site to disk prior to uploading.

The Web album software produces the ‘Skins’ folder and the jpeg and html files. Do these go into the main HTML folder on my Host or do they need to be in a subfolder?

The second question is. If I create a Gallery (Album) for each subject I want, such as one for Landscapes, one for Portraits etc, each time I generate a new Album will it not produce files with the same name? If so, how do I get round this so I can add separate albums to my web site?

If there is a tutorial that covers this that I have missed then a gentle shove in the right direction would be appreciated.

Anyone interested, the bare bones are at www.bearsandhouses.co.uk it has no content as yet as I was trying out the gallery software that is built into my editor….. It doesn’t work.

Any comments (honest ones please) would be appreciated as you can see, I am not a designer but I don’t want to build it around the templates.

Thanks in anticipation

Good questions Paddy. I would personally create a folder which is dedicated entirely to the albums you create.

main HTML folder -
|
|
- albums

In this folder I would create a new folder for everytime I generated a new album. I would then upload my new album in the folder which was just created.
This way you will have all your albums organized in a way that makes them easy to modify or delete when you are working on changes on the server.

About the file names you do not have to worry about this issue as the albums will go into each their seperate folders. However, should you want to rename the file names, you can enable the following option inside the batch operations for Photo Studio:

Should you want to name your album file names differently, which I recommend as search engine robots loves when file names are related to the content of the page, you can do this by changing the file name:

When uploading an album select the folder where the album was generated and upload the content inside this folder (incl. subfolders) to the folder you created on the server.

About the categories I would go about this using the same technique as mentioned above. However, this time I would create a category folder inside the album folder. When I have generated a new album, I would then select the appropriate category folder on my server, create a new subfolder within that folder and upload the content into that folder.

Great work on the website Paddy! I am looking forward to seeing it progress and if you need further tips just let us know

Thanks for that very detailed answer Darren. I will have a go at a couple of test albums and try it out. Should get chance tomorrow (Sunday) once I get the albums part sorted, I can get on with the content. Not too sure if this will be the finished layout as yet. I would like it to be a bit more..... ooo I don't know just a bit more lol

Once again, thanks for the quick reply

Thanks again Darren for the advice above. I have now got a trial Gallery working from my site. In actual fact, using Photo Studio/Photo Resize galleries have made life quite a bit easier. When using the built in Gallery creator in my web software, it meant that to upload any changes the whole image folder which contains the pictures as well as web graphics has to be uploaded each time as it regenerates all images when localy publishing the files.

Using the galleries from Photo Studio/Photo Resize, the pictures and their relevent pages are kept seperate which means that I can update my site without having to regenerate the pictures for the Galleries each time

Default Re web site

Good on you Paddy, I will be looking forward to seeing the updated site. I have built mine using Front Page, and I have tried Serif, but never really got to grips with it. However as you have said the VIG software is great for photo galleries, as it makes it all so easy. Just link to the first file and away to go.
