hey craiger,
There are a few things that could be causing this, such as a small dust particle disturbing the optical system within the mouse (check the bottom of the mouse for particles and check your mouse pad for the same). The optical system is very sensitive. It could also have been caused by a Windows update which may not have been compatible with your mouse driver (in this case uninstall your mouse driver, if available and reinstall, maybe check for mouse driver updates from the mouse hardware provider). Thirdly there is the option that it could be defect. If you have another mouse, you can check this almost instantly. Try these options and see if one of them will help.

If you are using a Dell mouse pad, chuck it out the Window. They have been known to cause crazy mouse movements at random intervals with optical mice due to their many reflective ridges.
